The Main Rules of Badminton.
Serving
Serving in Badminton is a very important part of the rally. This is what starts the rally in this sport, however there are many different rules on just this part of the rally. In two different types of matches (Singles and doubles) there are different areas that you can serve into.
Serving areas
In each of the different matches you can serve into the correct box however during
the singles you can also serve into the back lines and NOT the tram lines. During
doubles you can still serve into the main box however you can NOT serve into the back
lines where as you can serve into the tram side lines.
Rules (When Serving)
-
When you are serving you must start with the shuttle below your waist.
-
Both of your feet must be on the floor untill the shuttle is fully over the net.
-
You can't have your feet on the line of the box.
-
You are only allowed one fluent movement.
-
There is no second services
-
You can not serve until the opposition is fully ready.
Rules (When Returning)
-
If the incorrect person hits the shuttle the point will be lost for that team.
-
If you leave the shuttle as it is going out, then you win the point.
-
(In doubles) the person who is not being served to can stand anywhere on the court wheras the people being served to have to be in the box.
-
Feet must stay on the ground
Attacking
When you attack in badminton you need to make sure that you that you manage to
hit into the correct areas. During the services there are certain areas you can play
into. During singles during the rally the areas are the exact same as in the serve as
you can not go into the tram lines but the shuttle can go into the back lines. During
doubles in the rally you can hit the shuttle into any part of the court including the
and tram lines but during the serve you can not serve into the back lines.
-
You can only hit the shuttle cock once until it goes over the net.
-
Even in doubles you can not hit it twice even if it is once from each player.
-
You can not allow the shuttle to hit the floor.
-
If it is out and it hits the floor you loose the point and if it is in then you gain the point.
Defending
During badminton you want to be able to defend the shuttle as well as being able to
attack. While defending all you really need to do is return the shuttle. This is not a rule
but during competitive match you want to return it where it is most inconveniant.
Normaly the shuttle would go into the court however if you think that the shuttle is going out then you should leave the shuttle. If you are right and it goes out then you gain the point and then your team would serve the next rally, however if the shuttle goes in when you thought it was out then you will loose the point. That is all the rules that there are for defending in badminton.

Scoring
Badminton is like other racket sports, when a point is won by forced or unforced errors. At the begining of a match one person would hit the shuttle cock up in the air. When the shuttle lands on the floor which ever direction the head of the shuttle is pointing, that person is who should start. If you are playing multiple matches then you take it in turns to start or if there is a team with more female players they would start the match. The team or player who wins the point will be the person who starts the next rally. If your score is a even number like 4:3 then you would serve from the right hand side box. However if the score is an odd number like 5:3 then you would start from the left hand side box. If you serve and then win that point then you will also serve the next rally but you will swap sides (boxes).
